Modern Farms: Not Your Grandpa's Farm! (grades K - 12th)

from $100.00

Modern farms come in all shapes and sizes. They all provide us with food to eat. Jackie Nix’s picture book, Modern Farms, seeks to dispel myths and stereotypes of what “real” farms look like. Jackie provides an age-appropriate introduction to farming and food production to students K-12.

Students get a chance to connect with Jackie as she reads her book, Modern Farms, and goes into greater detail about each type of farm mentioned. She emphasizes the science and technology used to produce our food. The presentation uses video (when possible) to expose students (especially urban audiences) to the scope and scale of science and technology in food production. Additionally, she does a fun exercise using props quizzing students about food and non-food items that originate on the farm.

Key Learning Points

  • All food originates from a farm

  • Many non-food items come from farms

  • Modern farms utilize scientific technology

Presentations for older students focus more on the advanced technology used in agriculture featured in the book, career opportunities in agriculture that students may not know exist and a question and answer session.

Jackie Nix is an animal scientist, speaker, author, and artist who passionately seeks to educate and inspire students and their teachers regarding the role of agriculture in their lives.

Jackie has been teaching and creating educational content for audiences of all ages in the form of formal and informal classes since 1991! Jackie has a talent for taking highly technical, complex subjects and simplifying them for any audience.
